Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
This scripture is key to my relationship with nature. When I step into nature, I get glimpses of various facets of God’s personality. I love my church family and the reflections of God I see in their faces, but my favorite place to encounter God is in His creation!
I’ve walked along the shores of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the North Shore in Hawaii, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Malibu, California. No matter from which angle I gaze at the vastness of the ocean, it reminds me of the infinity of God.
When I encounter some of the unique creatures God created – like giraffes, zebras, hippopotamuses, inchworms, Blob fish, Praying Mantises – I see God’s incredible sense of humor, and I laugh along with him at the silliness He instilled for our enjoyment.
When I see how he paints clouds, sunsets, starry skies, and mountain landscapes, snowy winter scenes and cascading waterfalls, I am enthralled with his amazing creativity, and I love his use of color and his impeccable brush strokes. No painter or artist can match his abilities – they can only copy his brilliance.
When I wake up early enough to experience dolphins in the surf at sunrise, or I watch wisps of mist rise from a lake or pond in the early morning, I encounter His profound peace. I am reminded to be still and know He is God.
When I ponder the intricacies of the life cycle of a cicada (including its 17-year-underground sojourn), the regularity of the seasons, the movement of the solar system, the tides, the growth of a tiny baby inside its mother, and so many of the cycles of life in our world, I am humbled by his intricate workmanship!
The crashing of ocean waves against a craggy shore, the majesty of mountains rising far into the sky, and the winds of mighty storms remind me of His incredible power.
I feel close to God in nature, because everywhere I look I see reminders of who He is, what He has done, and how much He loves me! I am so thankful that He has signed his name in so many wonderfully amazing ways. Even the tiniest piece of His creation speaks of my God -- infinite and awe-inspiring! Most of all, I am thankful He gave me a heart that is able to see Him everywhere I look. His name is written in the stars, in the creases of my hands, in the wrinkles of the elders, in the waves of the ocean, in the bark of the tree. His footprint is the Grand Canyon and his smile is the rainbow. His voice is the thunder and the song of birds and the wind whispering through trees. The flickers of the fireflies are the twinkle of his eyes! Nature, in its fullness is the autograph of God!
